During my years as a professional wakeboarder and photographer in the sport, I often found myself contemplating how I would adapt to the world of kiteboarding. As a surfer felt that there was something magnetic about it, but I didn’t know how I would handle it until I was thrown into the experience. This trip with Mystic to Thurso, Scotland, marked my first true kiteboarding adventure. For six intense and awe-inspiring days, I had the privilege of documenting a team of four passionate kiters as they explored the rugged Northern shores of wintery Scotland. It was challenging, unpredictable, and at times, even daunting, but from the moment I set foot on the shore, it felt like I had found my place, my true elements.

Shooting from the shore, as well as in the water, I quickly realized how much more freedom there was in kiteboarding compared to wakeboarding. With the kite soaring high above, the riders were able to explore the full breadth of the water, creating dynamic, flowing compositions that were completely different from what I had experienced with wakeboarding. This sense of freedom opened a whole new perspective for me, shifting the way I approached each shot. Every wave, every jump, every line became a potential canvas, and for the first time, I felt like I was able to fully express myself through my work.

But the challenge wasn’t just capturing the action. In addition to shooting the team on the water, my role was also to capture the full range of Mystic’s new product line—waterwear, clothing, bags, and accessories. The goal was to create a catalogue of images that would highlight the brand’s offerings for their Fall/Winter campaign, which would be used across social media, their website, and their online shop. Balancing the excitement of dynamic, high-energy shots with the clean, polished product photography required a shift in my thinking, a blending of two worlds that I hadn’t fully explored before. As I navigated this delicate balance, I could feel myself growing as both an artist and a professional. Each shot, each frame, brought me closer to finding my unique voice in kiteboarding photography.

This experience wasn’t just about documenting a trip. It was a profound learning journey. It was about pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and evolving as both a photographer and a creator in a new realm of action sports. The growth I experienced during those six days in Scotland is something I will carry forward in my work, as it has shaped the way I approach both adventure and storytelling. The freedom, the creativity, the challenge—it all came together in one unforgettable trip.

I’m incredibly proud of the work that came out of this , and I’m grateful to have been a part of such a talented team. For a deeper look into the project, check out @mysticboarding on Instagram, and be sure to watch the full film by Jop Hemskeerk, linked at the end of this page. Enjoy!
